CEO’s Welcome

Friendship is a Superpower!

In 1875, Mary Elizabeth Townsend, a visionary ahead of her time, recognised the power of friendship. She played a key role in founding the GFS (Girl’s Friendly Society), the organisation behind our new project – Friendship Central – a welcoming space being developed at 4380 West Swan Road.

GFS began in the UK and soon spread globally. In 1888, GFS Perth was established, making it one of the oldest organisations in Western Australia. Although we share the international GFS name, we are proud to be an independent Western Australian entity.

For over 140 years, we’ve extended the hand of friendship to those in need, and we continue to do so today.

Friendship Central is being built on the legacy of those who came before us, providing spaces where friendships can grow and everyone can find a sense of belonging. Mary Townsend’s original vision was to support young women who moved from rural areas to urban centres in the UK to work in factories or domestic services. Life was difficult for these women, and Mary aimed to offer them friendship, support, and safe accommodation so they could thrive in their new environments. By 1900, GFS had grown to involve almost 185,000 women and girls across 1,361 branches.
Over time, GFS expanded internationally, reaching countries such as Ireland, Australia, Korea, the U.S., Cameroon, Canada, Ghana, Japan, Kenya, and more. Throughout its history, GFS has adapted to the needs of the times, launching projects like holiday houses, children’s clubs, summer camps, and community support initiatives. Programs have also provided advice and training on jobs, health, pregnancy, and isolation, all with a focus on friendship.

Recognising the loneliness and disconnection many people feel today, we conceived Friendship Central as a modern response. This four-acre site will be rooted in permaculture, fostering healthy living, ecological awareness, and strong community ties. Friendship Central will feature a café, a maker’s market, meeting rooms, a children’s play area, and various activities promoting personal wholeness and environmental care.

We’re excited for you to join us on this new journey. Together, we can share the superpower of friendship and build a brighter future.
